The Grand Visir (Frankel) wins The Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot for owners CLXX and trainer Ian Williams.
On a day where the weather meant flat racing’s showpiece resembled a scene from Cheltenham in mid December, it was fitting that the 2m 3f Ascot Stakes was taken by trainer Ian Williams who excels under both codes.
The Grand Visir was purchased for 170,000 GNS at the 2018 Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale with the aim to compete in the calendars premier staying handicaps and today he delivered on that plan.
Travelling strongly throughout under Richard Kingscote, he was asked to find his stride off the home turn, powering to the lead and winning by 1 1/4 lengths defying top weight in the process.
After the race trainer Williams said “The Grand Visir ran well at Newmarket the other day and fortunately he dropped the 1lb that allowed him in to this race. We weren’t sure he’d stay the trip but Richard gave him a lovely, patient ride. It’s great to have a Royal Ascot winner”.
