Lord Du Mesnil (Saint Des Saints) wins the £50,000 Betway Tommy Whittle Chase at Haydock Park for in form trainer Richard Hobson and owner Paul Porter.
On a rain sodden day at the Lancashire track, the 6yo gelding established a nice rhythm up front under a positive ride from Paul O’Brien. He travelled with plenty of exuberance, with the only real blemish coming at the last ditch in an otherwise faultless round of jumping.
After the race trainer Hobson said “He was in such good order coming into the race and he loves that ground and stays all day. We’ll probably go straight to the Eider Chase at Newcastle now”.
That target looks a smart move by connections as this was Lord Du Mesnil’s second win on the trot having scored over the Eider course last month.
Lord Du Mesnil was sourced privately from France having shown promise for trainer Dominique Bressou. He looks to be firmly on the upgrade and should remain competitive in staying handicaps for the rest of the season.
