Moon King (Sea The Moon) wins the Betway Handicap at Haydock for trainer Ralph Beckett and owners Merriebelle Irish Farm Limited.
Having enjoyed a superb 3yo campaign, registering 5 wins in a row and showing progressive form throughout 2019, Moon King looked open to further improvement this season and duly delivered on that promise here with a typically gutsy victory.
Sent off a well backed 2/1F and stepping up to two miles for the first time under regular partner Harry Bentley, Moon King was positioned just off the pace through the early stages and travelled well, gradually moving up through the gears as the race progressed. When Bentley asked for more in the home straight, he received the usual response with Moon lengthening his stride and grinding his way to the lead. Showing his trademark toughness and willing attitude he held off the late challenge of the fast finishing Blue Laureate to win by a head at the line.
