New Mandate (New Bay) wins the Paradise Stakes (Group III) at Ascot for Mark Chan and trainer Ralph Beckett.
On seasonal reappearance here New Mandate out up a gusty display to win under regular partner Frankie Dettori. Held up in the early exchanges he made some headway approaching the three furlong pole before battling to the lead inside the final furlong to see off Sir Busker by a neck.
A winner of the Group II Royal Lodge as a juvenile, New Mandate was campaigned sparingly at three, largely due to a sickness which kept him paddock bound for a long spell. He clearly retains a good level of ability and his handler was full of praise for the horse post race saying ”That was a pretty good effort. I wasn’t sure what to expect. He was a very sick horse after the Jersey last year and spent two months in a field. He wasn’t right at all and we never really got to the bottom of it. I hadn’t done a whole lot with him. What we do next is the question and he’s in the Lockinge and Queen Anne and we’ll see how we go. I just wanted some cover today and you can see he’s quite a bit of his winter coat to shift. We’ll stick to a mile and I don’t think the ground is that important to him
