Private purchase A Plus Tard (Kapgarde) wins the Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase (Listed Race) at the Cheltenham Festival for owners Cheveley Park Stud and trainer Henry De Bromhead.
A Plus Tard had beaten Arkle winner Duc Des Genievres on his penultimate start and was sent on his way at 5-1 favourite, for what on paper at least looked like a highly competitive handicap. The reality was very different indeed. The son of Kapgarde blew this field away under the supremely talented Rachael Blackmore with a devastating display of jumping. He travelled powerfully throughout and made a visually impressive race winning move on the home turn before kicking clear to win by a massive 16 lengths.
After the race, De Bromhead said “I’m delighted with that. Rachel gave him a super ride and I’m really pleased for the Thompsons as it’s good of them to support us.
“We always liked him. He beat Duc Des Genievres in his beginners chase which looks all the better now. We were disappointed when he was beaten at Naas on his last start and when he got into the Close Brothers this looked the perfect race.”
The 5 year old gelding was identified as a hot prospect having won twice over fences for trainer Dominique Bressou in France and looks to have an exciting future ahead of him.
